Tutorial & Feedback 29/10/18

Essay Question:
Exploring how effective is the use of Graphic Design within political campaigns and protest?

Examples to focus on:
Obama's 'Hope' Poster
Ken Garland
EU/Brexit Campaign
Greenpeace Brexit Bus

Feedback:
- Make sure to speak about the similarities and differences between the examples.
- Look at the audience - young audience.
- Look at the media/materials used within each example.
- Ken Garland shows that political design/protest is not a new thing.
- Possible theories to look at could also be mass-communication, consumerism.
- People connect and identify with the politics, in a way that's 'consumerism'. How the design communicates with the audience.
- Obama's 'Hope' Poster in a way followed the 'Obey' trend at the time. Britain's 'Remain' campaign followed the minimalism and simple/clean lines trend. The design spoke with a young audience through reference to popular culture and trends.
- Look at 'It's Nice That' - design site that posts articles about politics. The design of the political material is so effective and reaches young audiences in such a way that they appear even on 'design' blogs. eg. articles - 'EU and Me', 'EU referendum voters'
- Your question could become even more focused if you'd like, and talk about how the design is effective in reaching 'young audiences'.
